CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

DREN

By the time Dren reached the trees, whoever shot Lotte was long gone. He scouted the area and found some scuffed ground near the base of a large oak tree that had stout, low branches that even a ten-year-old could climb. There was a lane on the other side of the narrow strip of woodland, and he imagined the archer had probably shot and run.

If he hadn’t wasted time using his body to shield Karl, he might have caught the failed assassin or at least seen them. Or the fucker could have hit Karl. As he emerged from the trees, four security guards jogged toward him, and several people, including Karl, stood around Lotte, who remained on the ground.

So much for keeping his head down.

Having Karl out in the open sent nervous energy buzzing through his body despite Karl having been surrounded by hundreds of thousands of people over the weekend. He wasn’t convinced about Karl’s theory of Lotte being the target, but if it was true, it put a whole new spin on this thing. He needed to think, and with Karl under threat, he couldn’t.

He homed in on that distinctive blond hair.

Henning stood up from where he’d been talking to the medic and moved next to Karl. Both men were stiff with tension and stress, but Karl’s back looked like a huge target as it faced the woods.

“What the hell are you doing out here anyway?” Henning said. “You were meant to be staying inside.”

“Lotte got a text from Walter, telling her to keep Karl out of the public areas,” Dren said as he reached them.

Henning frowned. “Walter’s in Columbia on business.”

This whole thing sounded worse by the second. “I’ll need Lotte’s phone.”

Henning nodded. “I’m sending one of the security team with her.”

Karl still stared at Lotte, or rather at the arrow in her shoulder. To Dren, the injury was a moderate one, but it had shocked the hell out of these civilians. Dren put his hand on the stunned man’s shoulder. “Come on, let’s get you inside. There’s nothing you can do here.”

Karl shrugged off his hand. “I’m waiting for the ambulance.”

Dren leaned in and whispered, “Whether that was meant for you or Lotte, you’re putting everyone here at risk.”

Karl shot him such a look of pain that Dren regretted saying anything, but Karl didn’t look surprised at his conclusion. The sound of a siren broke through the murmuring. Without speaking, Karl headed for the building’s rear entrance.

Dren stayed a foot behind him, scanning the area for further threats. His investigation had taken every moment of his spare time, but the list of suspects narrowed with every additional attack. Whoever it was had been able to disconnect the surveillance cameras in the Neumann F1 garage three hours before the GP but had still been acceptable to the FIA scrutineer and the Neumann team. Therefore, his adversary had knowledge of surveillance systems, how an F1 garage worked, specialist racing tires, and now archery, if it was a single individual.
